Since energy flows through all living things, it makes sense that Reiki would benefit horses. Reiki Healing clears and balances the energy of the chakras, meridians, and aura. For horses, once those blockages are cleared and energy begins to flow, the horse often feels immediate relief.
Horses respond deeply to Reiki Healing because they are very intuitive animals and are completely connected both to nature and their immediate environment. It is for this very reason that there are so many gentle giants suffering in silence.
Seeing is believing — horses can be quite animated during a Reiki session. Deep relaxation and clearing behaviors such as: foot tapping, yawning, chewing, licking, head shaking, and twitching is very common. Like humans, each horse is unique, and their issues are unique, too. How quickly they respond depends on the depth of their issue and how long they have been hurting.
Unhappy horses often display emotional and behavioral problems that can disrupt the entire barn. When these issues are not addressed properly, horses can become ill or simply become so stressed that they become vulnerable to injury or to injuring their rider. Sometimes the horse feeling the stress isn’t the only horse in need of Reiki. It is not uncommon for one angry or unhappy horse, owner, or rider to create anxiety for everyone in the barn. Even the happiest horse can become stressed, ill, or injured due to another horse or person’s issues.
It can be extremely frustrating to work with an animal when you have no idea how to help them or get them to trust you. Reiki can alleviate that frustration, helping every animal to release unwanted negative energy and refuel with positive, loving, guided healing.
I can provide distant Reiki to any animal living too far away for me to visit or one that I am unable to visit immediately. The session begins and ends with a phone call to the owner or trainer and the same post-care feedback will be provided.
Equine Reiki can assist with:
- Injury or trauma
- Emotional scars from poor handling and training or abuse
- Fear and aggression
- Competition or transportation stress
- Protection against complications related to surgery, anesthesia, and medication
Reiki is a complementary therapy to be used alongside proper veterinary care – never in place of it. Reiki has proven to be beneficial before and after surgery, transportation, and competition, and when offered immediately after an injury. Reiki can reduce swelling, pain, stress, and fear related to an injury. It is known to accelerate healing and reduce infection, as well as complications associated with surgery, anesthesia, and medication.
An Equine Reiki appointment consists of:
- Pre-session consult
- Energetic assessment of stable, stall, and environment
- Energetic clearing of stall
- Reiki healing for horse — no time restriction due to the individuality of each horse
- When the Reiki session is complete, I make notes and discuss the treatment and post-care with you in detail.

Janet's Work at Special Equestrians
"I began volunteering at Special Equestrians in Warrington, PA, in November, 2009, after reading about their Step Along The Way program. This program provides stall rest and rehabiliative care for select injured race horses and trains them to work with vulnerable, at-risk children. This generous organization allowed me unlimited access to the badly injured racehorse El Frio.
El Frio's injuries were severe, but his spirit is so strong. While I'd love to take credit for his amazing progress, I can tell you what I know for sure — El Frio clung to hope, waiting to be rescued. He waited for a horse rescue organization to help him, he waited to be moved to Special Equestrians, and he waited for me to pick up on all the signs pointing me in his direction. Although I had never heard of Special Equestrians before, the week I met El Frio, I heard about them three times! Special Equestrians is the most wonderfully healing place for an animal to recover, filled with kind, loving people who care for him. The moment I read about their Step Along the Way program and their rescue efforts, I emailed them to see if I could help.
Each time I visited El Frio, I let his progress and feedback and my instincts guide me. With every Reiki session, El Frio improved in ways I could never have imagined. It was as if he had been waiting for some help to clear all the bottled-up junk clogging his system, so he could do the rest of the healing himself. He is entertaining to watch work with the energy; his yawning, tapping his foot, rolling his jaw and tongue, swaying as he fights to stay awake.
El Frio has taught me so much about the power of the spirit and intuitive genius of these amazing animals. We have a long road ahead before we can say El Frio is completely recovered, but this beautiful horse has won my heart and trust. The same can be said for all the beautiful therapy horses at Special Equestrians.
UPDATE: It is now 2 1/2 years since I first met El Frio and I feel so blessed to report that he has made a miraculous recovery. He continues to live and thrive at Special Equestrians and will remain my baby forever because thanks to wonderful people like Marika Jones, our amazing barn manager, and all the angelic staff at SE I was able to adopt him!
